Itinerary
-
Day 1: Transfer from Kigali to Karongi at Lake Kivu
- Meet our tour representative in Kigali.
- Setting off from Kibuye, we soon approach Lake Kivu’s ‘Bay of Islands,’ a beautiful setting unlike anywhere else in the country.
- We then ‘island hop’, stop off for lunch and swim in the crystal clear and impressively clean, fresh water to cool off.
- In the afternoon, we visit Napoleon Island, a remarkable (and noisy) colony of thousands of fruit bats that fight amongst themselves for the best roost. It’s then just a short paddle to our campsite on another beautiful uninhabited island still covered with native trees that provide a rare haven for numerous species of birds to dart in and out of the foliage.
- With exclusive access to the island, we set up camp, buy fish for dinner from local fishermen – supporting a local community – and cook our own simple but delicious meal, which we can provide for you, around a small open fire.
- Then, in the silence of the lake the following morning, we wake to a truly remarkable dawn chorus.
Dinner and overnight at Comoran Lodge.
-
Day 2: Kayak from Karongi to Gishayu Island with a stop to visit Napoleon Island
- After a simple breakfast, head towards Kibuye or Kinunu for an enriching coffee tour. Discover the coffee production process and savour the local flavours.
- Enjoy lunch on Amohoro (Peace) Island, reflecting on the unique experiences of the past days amid stunning views.
- Paddle back to the starting point, taking in the picturesque Rwandan coast with its lush, terraced farms.
Practical Notes: Full instruction is provided, no previous experience is needed.
Wear light, quick-drying clothes and bring a hat, sunscreen, and a change of clothes.
Footwear that can get wet is recommended. Avoid bringing valuables.
Optional adventure camping at Gishayu Island is available.
-
Day 3: Kayaking from Gishayu back to Karongi and Transfer back to Kigali
- Check out from our island this morning after breakfast.
- You will paddle a modern sea kayak or sit on top to dip into inlets and across bays as you soak up the spectacular scenery, meet the fishermen, and admire the views of this beautiful lake heading to Kinunu.
- This afternoon, your driver will transfer you to Kigali (The journey will take between 3.5 to 4 hours).
End of Tour.
