Alcobaça, Batalha, Tomar
Start the tour after meeting your Portugal tour guide.
Head to Alcobaça and visit the Royal Abbey of Santa Maria, founded by the Order of Cistercians in 1153. The construction began in 1178 on land donated by King Afonso Henriques, the first King of Portugal, to the Order of Cistercians, in fulfilment of a vow made after the Christian reconquest of Santarém. Here are the magnificent gothic tombs of the two lovers, King Pedro and Ines de Castro.
Continue to Batalha: built-in 1386 to fulfil a vow made by King John I to Virgin Mary to bless the Portuguese Army against the Castilians in the great battle of Aljubarrota on 14th August 1385. The monastery of Batalha is a gothic masterpiece.
Discover Tomar, Templar town with its Castle and Convent of Christ, a UNESCO World Heritage Site from the 12th century. It operated as the headquarters of the Knights Templar in Portugal, thereafter known as the Knights of Christ.
Climb one of the most wonderful aqueducts Portugal, the Aqueduct Pegues a magnificent work from the 17th century, 6 km long.
