Description

Ascend to Las Pampas del Misti and enter the stunning Salinas y Aguada Blanca National Reserve. Trek through rugged terrain to Base Camp at 4,650 meters, setting up camp and acclimatizing amidst breathtaking views. Climb to the summit of Misti Volcano at 5,825 meters and explore its fumarolic crater. Itinerary

Day 1: Hotel Pick-Up – Chiguata – Salinas Y Aguada Blanca Reserve – Base Camp
- 08:00 hrs: Pick-up from your hotel. We will immediately board the 4×4 vehicle and head towards Chiguata, traveling to Las Pampas del Misti (approx. 1.5 hours). The elevation here is 3,450 meters above sea level.
- 09:30 hrs: Arrive at the entrance to the Salinas y Aguada Blanca National Reserve at 3,400 meters. From this point, we will begin our trek, which will take about 5 to 6 hours until we reach Base Camp at 4,650 meters above sea level. During the hike, we will take a break for lunch.
- 15:00 hrs: We will set up our tents and organize camp with all necessary equipment, including the dining tent. Afterward, you will have time to acclimatize.
- 18:30 hrs: Dinner and rest overnight to recharge for the ascent the following day.

Day 2: Base Camp – Misti Volcano Crater – Return to Arequipa
- Early Morning: After breakfast, we will begin the ascent to the summit. The hike will last approximately 5 to 6 hours, bringing us to 5,825 meters above sea level.
- Upon reaching the summit, you will be able to view the Misti Volcano crater, where fumarolic activity can be observed. The breathtaking landscape at the top is a sight to behold. We will spend around 1 hour exploring the crater.
- Return to Base Camp: After visiting the crater, we will descend to base camp (approximately 1.5 hours). Once there, we will pack up our belongings and head to the meeting point where the transportation will be waiting for us (another 1.5-hour ride).
- 15:00 hrs: Estimated arrival back in Arequipa. We will drop you off near the main square.

Know Before You Go

If you're planning to climb the Misti Volcano, one of the most iconic volcanoes in southern Peru, here’s everything you need to know before you embark on this thrilling 2-day adventure.

1. Altitude and Acclimatization

Misti rises to 5,825 meters (19,110 feet) above sea level, so proper acclimatization is crucial to avoid altitude sickness.

Spend at least 1-2 days in Arequipa to adjust to the altitude before starting your trek. Arequipa itself sits at 2,335 meters above sea level.

Consider consulting with your guide for acclimatization tips and necessary precautions.

2. Difficulty Level

The climb is challenging but achievable for those with basic trekking experience.

The ascent includes steep volcanic terrain, loose rocks, and high-altitude conditions, so you should be in good physical shape.

The trek involves both daytime climbing and overnight camping in cold conditions.

3. Weather Conditions

Temperature fluctuations are common on the climb. Be prepared for warm days but cold nights—especially near the summit.

The weather can change quickly, so be ready for wind and rain during the climb, particularly in the higher altitudes.

It's recommended to climb during the dry season (from April to October), when weather conditions are more stable.

4. What to Bring

Warm clothing: Temperatures can drop significantly at higher altitudes, so pack layers including thermal clothing.

Good hiking boots: The terrain can be rough, so sturdy boots with good ankle support are necessary.

Sun protection: High altitudes mean stronger UV rays, so bring sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat.

Personal gear: Don’t forget your camera, water bottle, and headlamp for the night.

Sleeping bag: A good sleeping bag for cold nights, especially if you plan to camp near the summit.

Snacks: High-energy snacks to keep you fueled during the hike.

5. Itinerary Overview

Day 1: The ascent begins early from Arequipa (approx. 1.5 to 2-hour drive). You’ll trek through the base of the volcano to the high camp. Expect an ascent of 4-5 hours before camping overnight.

Day 2: You’ll wake up early for the final ascent, reaching the summit for incredible panoramic views. The descent takes another 3-4 hours, and you’ll return to Arequipa in the afternoon.

6. Safety and Guide

Climbing with a guide is essential, as the terrain can be dangerous, and the altitude requires expert navigation.

Guides will also help manage safety protocols and provide necessary equipment like crampons if needed.

7. Physical Preparation

Although the Misti climb is not a technical ascent, it’s physically demanding due to the altitude and terrain.

If you're new to high-altitude trekking, try to train with long hikes and stair climbing to build stamina before the trip.

8. Health Considerations

Always listen to your body. If you feel symptoms of altitude sickness (headache, dizziness, nausea), inform your guide immediately and take breaks as needed.

Staying hydrated is key to preventing altitude sickness, so drink plenty of water throughout the climb.

General Information

With the Misti Volcano Trekking Tour, you can make a high altitude climb and climb the MISTI VOLCANO which is located at the foot of the Chili Valley at 2,400 meters above sea level within the National Reserve of Salinas and Aguada Blanca. To climb this volcano no technical preparation is needed since it is not a technical mountain, it is a strato volcano composed of ashes and volcanic lava. This tour is ideal for extreme sports lovers.

The only difficulty to climb MISTI VOLCANO will be the volcanic ashes and sand that in some cases form dunes. The fact that we find these elements in the volcano makes our ascent a little more difficult and forced. Its age dates back approximately 800 thousand years and it is said that in colonial times it was known as “volcano without a name”. According to the myths, the ethnic groups that lived near the crater had to flee their lands because of the explosion of the volcano and when they returned home they took its name as a kind of reprimand. It is also said that it was called Machu Putina which in indigenous languages means “Old volcano”. This is due to the duality in the Andean cosmovision, since 40 kilometers away is the Huayna Putina, which means “young volcano”. However, it is not known since when it began to be called Misti, which in Quechua means “Creole or white man”. It is said that it was given this name because the city of Arequipa is called “The White City”, due to its buildings made of white ashlar.
