Maputo City Tour
- Maputo City Tour takes you to the iconic places of the capital city of Mozambique with stops at:
- Fortress (Fortaleza da Nossa Senhora da Conceição)
- Our journey begins at the historic Fortress of Maputo. Built-in the late 18th century, this fortress served as a defence against invasions. Now, it’s a museum housing fascinating exhibits on Mozambique’s colonial history, including the tomb of Ngungunhane, the last emperor of the Gaza Empire.
- Train Station
- Next, we move on to the Train Station, often referred to as one of the most beautiful railway stations in the world.
- Central Market
- Central Market
- A short drive from the train station is the Central Market. This market is the perfect spot to experience the local life of Maputo. Here, you will find everything from fresh produce to handmade crafts.
- Independence Square
- From the market, we head to the heart of Maputo, Independence Square. This square is a significant symbol of Mozambique's struggle for independence. At its center stands the statue of Samora Machel, the country’s first president. Important buildings surround the square, including the City Hall and the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception.
- Cathedral
- Adjacent to Independence Square, we have the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception. With its towering spire, this striking white cathedral is one of the most important religious sites in the city.
- Iron House
- Our next stop is the Ron House, designed by Gustave Eiffel. This pre-fabricated iron building was intended to be the governor's residence, but its metal structure made it unsuitable for Maputo’s tropical climate.
- Botanical Garden
- British landscape architect Thomas Honney designed the Botanical Garden in the 19th century. This peaceful oasis offers a break from the hustle and bustle of the city.
- Natural History Museum
- Next, we visit the Natural History Museum. This museum is famous for its impressive collection of wildlife, including some of the last remaining examples of animals native to Mozambique. The museum also features fascinating displays of the country’s natural and cultural history.
- Polana Church
- After the Natural History Museum, we visit the Polana Church. A clear example of modernist architecture, designed by Portuguese architect Nuno Lopes, is an iconic landmark in Maputo. The church’s unique design and triangular structure symbolize the clasping of hands in prayer. Inside, the serene ambience and beautiful stained glass windows create a peaceful retreat in the city's heart.
- FEIMA- The Art & Craft Market
- We end our tour at FEIMA, the Art and Craft Market. Located in a lovely park, FEIMA is the perfect place to explore Mozambican art, crafts, and cuisine. Browse through stalls filled with vibrant paintings, intricate wood carvings, and handmade jewellery. It is a great spot to relax, enjoy local food, and pick up unique souvenirs to remember your trip.
