Johor Bahru Walking Tour
- Meet the tour guide at your hotel (or any other agreed location) within Johor Bahru city at 8.30 am.
- Johor Bahru, the southern end of Peninsular Malaysia, is located along the Straits of Johor. Founded in 1855 as Tanjung Puteri, the city was also once known as “Little Shantou” by the Chinese Community in Johor Bahru.
- Walk to the cultural street at Jalan Tan Hiok Nee, one of the oldest streets in the city, named after one of the founding fathers of Johor Bahru and is also known for being one of the oldest neighbourhoods in the city.
- See the Red House, an antique shop dotted along the road.
- Head to the Johor old Chinese temple. It is a traditional temple that dates from the 19th century and is built in honour of five deities venerated by the Chinese community. This is one of the oldest religious buildings in the city and is instantly recognizable thanks to its red and white colour scheme. Learn the story of how the Chinese community first came to Johor Bahru.
- Go for a Meldrum walk and to Jalan Wong Ah Hock, a Chinese man who came to Singapore in 1854 and established himself in building construction and other businesses.
- Visit the Hiap Joo bakery, using a charcoal oven for baking its treats, which was inspired by the traditional way of making biscuits in Hainan in, China, which was the hometown of the original owner.
- Proceed to Gurdwara Sahib Johor Bahru, a Sikh temple which was built in 1992, an important place of worship for the 250 Sikh families who call Johor Bahru home.
- Continue to Arulmigu Rajamariamman Devasthanam Johor Bahru, a South Indian temple with more than 100 years of history. It is a place of extraordinary art and devotion. You may shop around for Indian souvenirs after visiting the temple.
- End the tour by 11:30 am.
