Description
Trek through Jebel Toubkal, North Africa’s highest mountain. It has been a target for mountain climbers since the 1920’s when the Club Alpin Francais founded a branch in Casablanca and European adventurers started discovering High Atlas Mountains. Explore the Atlas mountain and Berber villages, live like local during the treks, and discover the South of Morocco in this 2-day trek through Mount Toubkal. Experience the thrill of playing with patches of snow in the highest mountain of the High Atlas Mountain range.
Itinerary
-
Day 1 : Marrakech - Imlil - Chamharouch - Toubkal Refuge
- Meet at the famous Jamaa El Fna (or from your hotel if it’s accessible by car).
- Head toward the High Atlas Mountains and enjoy the ride with a scenic road through the mountains.
- Arriving at Imlil Village, meet the Local Guide and Multer.
- Begin the adventure heading along the Mizane Valley, first towards the village of Aremd and then onto the shrine of Sidi Chamarouch. Built on a moraine spur overlooking the valley floor, Aremd is the largest village in the valley and provides an interesting mix of traditional terraced farming, gites and streets that seem to be permanently gridlocked by goats and cattle. For generations the local Berber villagers have worked these lands, producing corn, potatoes and walnuts from the harsh landscape.
- Continue east and cross the flood plains to mule tracks, up into the high rocky cliffs above the valley.
- Cross the river and come to the pastoral shrine of Sidi Chamarouch, which attracts tourists and pilgrims alike. The village sits besides a small waterfall, a jumbled cluster of houses that seem to melt together into an anarchic mass.
- The trail continues to climb steadily, snaking and zigzagging its way up to the snow-line and the Toukbal Refuge (3206m).

Day 2 : Toubkal Refuge - Toubkal Summit - Aremd village - Imlil
- Early morning, make an attempt to summit Jebel Toukbal, the highest peak in Northern Africa.
- Go up the south cirque, cross the stream above the refuge, and head across one of the mountains' numerous scree fields to negotiable a seemingly endless carpet of boulders and rocks. The walking is relatively straightforward, but the scree and the altitude will make the going quite difficult in parts. However, the views along the way make the journey more than worthwhile.
- Cresting the ridgeline, reach the plateau; from where it is a short walk to the summit. The vistas out across the surrounding landscape are quite breathtaking.
- Take in the unrestricted views in every direction, from the Marrakesh Plain to the High Atlas in the north and as far south as the Anti-Atlas and the Sahara. Pliny, the great Roman scholar, once described the High Atlas Mountains as "the most fabulous mountains in all of Africa"; from our vantage point high above the valley, it is easy to understand why.
- Retracing the steps, return down the mountain and head back towards Imlil.
