Bergamo City Tour Itinerary
- Our walking tour will take us through the alleys, towers, and squares of the medieval city, built around Piazza Vecchia, its heart.
- Buildings, squares, and roads have undergone numerous renovations over the centuries, but Bergamo Alta's elegant charm has remained unspoiled.
- You will visit the following sights:
- Piazza Vecchia, with the precious Contarini Fountain
- Palazzo Nuovo (today home to the Angelo Mai Library)
- Palazzo della Ragione, with its mysterious solar clock
- The civic tower (or "Campanone"), an icon for locals, famous for its nightly chiming of the bell
- The Colleoni Chapel is a masterpiece of the Renaissance and the mausoleum of the famous Bergamo-born condottiere.
- The Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, housing the funerary monument of Gaetano Donizetti, the precious 15th-century wooden inlays on a design by Lorenzo Lotto and the Florentine and Flemish tapestries
- The Cathedral dedicated to the patron saint of Bergamo, Sant’Alessandro, in front of the fourteenth-century marble baptistery
- Leaving the monumental center, we will continue along the narrow alleys, admiring charming craft shops that still retain the medieval structure, typical restaurants and osterias, antique shops and tempting pastry shops offering local delights, all lined along the main roads Via Gombito/via Colleoni, the ancient maximum decumanum of the Roman city, which has maintained its commercial vocation over the centuries.
- If time allows, we may reach the sixteenth-century Porta San Giacomo to enjoy the breathtaking view of the lower town and admire the colossal Venetian walls, which have been a UNESCO site since 2017.
