Itinerary

1. Day 1: Reykjavik - Skógafoss - Reynisdrangar

   • Starting from Reykjavik towards Hvolsvöllur as an option, we can visit a Lava Exhibition center that features an interactive exhibition exploring the art and science of geology and the volcanic systems in Iceland. 
   • Driving forward, we will stop at the waterfall Seljalandsfoss. In summer, it is possible to walk behind the waterfall, which is quite a unique experience. 
   • Next is The impressive waterfall Skógafoss and, as an option, the Folk Museum at Skógar. 
   • The next stop is the glacier Sólheimajökull before continuing to Dyrhólaey, a natural reserve and a nesting colony of numerous seabirds. 
   • Drive to Reynisdrangar, which has a spectacular coast and beautiful rock formations. The promontory at Dyrhólaey is a massive natural arch carved by the relentless pounding of the winds and surf with rich birdlife. Black sand beach Reyibisfjara has a dramatic black sand beach in Vik, which houses basalt columns that make up the rock formations adjacent to the beach. 

   Dinner at Vik Smiðjan Brugghús brewpub/brewery and overnight at VIK.

2. Day 2: Kirkjubæjarklausur - Jökulsárlón

   • Starting from Kirkjubæjarklausur, we will see the most extensive lava field ever to flow on Earth in historical times. 
   • Then, we drive across Skeiðarársandur, a vast black sandy desert washed down by torrential glacial rivers, to Skaftafell National Park. Its natural beauty results from favourable weather conditions and the interaction of fire and ice. Beneath the Vatnajökull ice cap, towering above Skaftafell, is one of Iceland’s most active volcanic systems. 
   • Stop at Skaftafell National Park to see the attractive Visitors Center and take a walk. There are many exciting hiking trails in the area. We can hike to Svartifoss, one of Iceland’s most picturesque waterfalls, famous for the basalt columns surrounding it. 
   • Next, take road number 1 is Fjaðrárgljúfur, a magnificent and massive canyon about 100 meters deep and about two kilometres long. 
   • Continue to the incredible Jökulsárlón, the Glacial Lagoon, where massive icebergs, broken off the Breiðamerkurjökull glacier, float and grind together in the deep waters. Seals are frequently seen. Kayaking or a boat between the icebergs is an option.

   Overnight Glacier Lagoon.

   Optional activity: Boat at Glacier Bay.

3. Day 3: Svartifoss - Reykjavik

   • We are starting from Glacier Lagoon and driving back to Reykjavik. We can hike to Svartifoss, one of Iceland’s most picturesque waterfalls, famous for the basalt columns surrounding it. Depending on time and location, you can also add extra spots like:
     • Lava fields
     • Moss fields
     • Fjaðrárgljúfur canyon
     • Svartifoss
     • Fjaðrárgljúfur canyon
     • Svinfellsjokull
