Start your tour by wearing a virtual reality mask that allows you to view the site in a 3-D reconstruction and see what Olympia was like in ancient times.
See where the complete ancient temples and famous statues once stood, and watch ancient athletes preparing for different sporting events.
Admire one of the seven wonders of the world, the 13 m tall gold and ivory statue of Zeus, constructed in the 5th century with marble and limestone. According to history, this giant statue of Zeus stood inside the temple.
Walk to the stadium area and watch the athletes compete in a foot race around the track. The running track is more than 200 metres long and almost 30 to 34 metres wide.
Visit the Temple of Hera, one of the oldest temples in Greece. It was built in the 7th century BC and follows the Dorian rhythm.
Head to the Museum of Olympia, an important scientific institution that holds antiquities from different periods.

The majority of the antiquities in the Museum of Olympia come from excavations in the surrounding area. The most valuable items are the statues of Nike Paionios and Hermes of Praxiteles.
The ancient Olympic Games were the most important sports event in the Greek world. According to mythology, it was Hercules who established the games to celebrate the success of his 12 labours. The sports were organized in Olympia, which was the most important temple in honour of the king of the gods, Zeus. The games were held from 776 BC every four years. Before the start of the games, religious rituals took place to honour the gods. The participants swore in front of a statue of Zeus to keep the rules and laws. Heralds were sent throughout the known world to inform humanity of the games. During the period of the games, all armed conflicts were forbidden to keep safe those travelling to and from Olympia.
The Olympic Games continued until the first Christian years. In the 19th century, there was an idea to restart the tradition of the Olympic Games from a new perspective. For that purpose, Pierre de Coubertin, a French baron, organized a conference in Paris. At that meeting, the International Committee was created. In the ancient era, all participants in the games received rewards, and modern events followed the same tradition. The combination of culture and athleticism is what makes the Olympic Games unique to this day. Pierre de Coubertin died in 1938, and his heart was buried in the land of Ancient Olympia.
