History Tour in Derry
Begin the 90-minutes walking tour at Free Derry Wall and take you into the heart of the Bogside district of Derry, the crucible of the modern-day conflict in Ireland.
Commence the history tour with the partition of Ireland and the reasons why the six-county states exist and the sectarian nature of its very existence. The widespread and government-backed religious discrimination of Irish Catholics in this part of Ireland lead to the formation of the Civil Rights movement in 1967 to campaign for equality.
Learn about the Battle of the Bogside in August 1969, which saw the British Army and the IRA begin a long war that lasted up to the mid-1990s. The Northern Ireland Civil Rights Association, which was formed in 1967, grew in stature over the next few years.
Gain insights into Bloody Sunday (30th January 1972) which was Britain's answer to Catholic demands for civil rights in Ireland, which also lead to the downfall of the Civil Rights Association and an escalation in the Irish-British conflict.
Get answers to both inquiries into Bloody Sunday, Widgery and Saville, which will also be examined on the tour.
