Description
The Haute Ville, or the Upper Town, developed around the castle of the Counts of Toulouse; it boasts exceptional views of the lower town and surrounding landscape (Mont Ventoux). The medieval city spreads over 3 hectares and offers many secrets; the fortifications were strengthened in the 15th century, and a drawbridge accessed it. In a picturesque setting, the Upper City shaded streets offering several preserved buildings: the former Episcopal Palace, White Penitents' Chapel, and XVI and XVII century Mansions with pretty facades decorated with stone carved fruit garlands. Strolling along the old streets, some art galleries, some fountains located on shaded squares, some hidden charming jardin de curé or "enclosed gardens". You will visit the Cathedral Sainte-Marie de l'Assomption, built on a rocky promontory for 80 metres and decorated with painted stained glass windows. The Old Town quarter and its architectural "attractions" make it appealing- an insider's tip!
