Walking Through Bucharest: Exploring Ceausescu's Legacy

I spent a fascinating day with Giulia strolling around Bucharest. I was mostly interested in Ceausescu, the former dictator of Romania and the scars that he and his wife left on the people of Romania. We visited the evidence of the damage that Ceausescu caused; one of the largest buildings in the world to house the bureaucracy of his tyranny and his own family mansion, extravagant and kitschy. But the best part of the tour was Giulia’s insights into how dictatorships persist, through intimidation, murder, propaganda and the fear instilled in citizens. Giulia speaks from first hand experience and I really appreciated our conversation about the ways in which education in communist regimes brings about obedience, apathy and corruption. Giulia is a wonderful guide to Romanian society and culture. I learned so much from her.
