  • Don't waste your pack space with things that you can easily find (and probably cheaper, too).
  • Men:
  • 2 base layer athletic T-shirts
  • 1 base layer long-sleeved shirt (for exploring lower-altitude areas with mosquitoes)
  • 2 mid-layer jackets (read through the guide in the link above for help in choosing the right kind)
  • 2 cotton undershirts
  • 1 water-resistant, breathable shell
  • 2 cotton T-shirts (for chilling)
  • 2 button-up long-sleeved shirts (nice to have for dinners and hot dates)

  • 1 hoodie/sweater
  • 4 pairs of cotton socks (choose your colors wisely)
  • 3 pairs of high-performance wicking socks
  • 1 pair of hiking pants (lightweight quick-dry)
  • 1 pair of jeans or regular pants (although these can get heavy)
  • 2 pairs of lightweight convertible pants
  • 1 pair of hiking shoes
  • 1 light wool hat
  • Women:
  • 1 rain jacket, especially if you're going to the Amazon or spending a weekend in Mindo
  • 1 down jacket (unnecessary if going to the coast - opt for a lightweight fleece instead)
  • 1 pair of skinny jeans, essential for city walks or a night out
  • 1 pair of leggings, which can be used to replace jeans or for a hike up Cotopaxi
  • 1 pair of joggers, perfect for sleeping or relaxing in your hotel
  • 1 pair of hiking pants; if you're not planning to do too much hiking, these can be left behind in favor of the leggings. This is something to consider, especially when packing carry-on only.
  • 4 T-shirts: 2 active and UV-blocking for hikes or the beach, and 2 for city wear
  • 2 tanks: 1 that can be dressed up (Quito has a good nightlife scene) and 1 for layering

  • 1 swimsuit, for an impromptu hot springs trip and definitely if you're going to the Amazon, coast, or the Galapagos
  • Underwear: 5-7 pairs! A dark pair can be used in place of a swimsuit when in a pinch.
  • Socks: 3 pairs, plus one pair of hiking socks to ensure you never get a blister
  • Bra: 1-2 sports bras and 1 regular bra or bralette
  • Warm hat & gloves: you'll need them at the top of a volcano
  • Wide-brim hat: perfect for keeping the sun off your face while exploring the cities
  • 1 scarf: use it to jazz up an outfit or for warmth. You could always wait and pick one up from Otavalo Market on a day trip from Quito.
  • Regardless of how long you're actually planning on staying here, bring enough clothes for just five days to one week. There are tons of full-service laundromats here. Often, you can drop off your clothes and pick them up an hour or two later for a couple of bucks.

Know before you go

  • Currency: Ecuador uses the U.S. Dollar (USD), so no currency exchange is needed if you're coming from the U.S.
  • Cash vs. Card: While cards are widely accepted in cities, it's best to carry cash, especially in rural areas, small businesses, and markets.
  • Official Language: Spanish is the official language, but basic English is understood in tourist areas.
  • Indigenous Languages: Kichwa is also spoken in some Andean and Amazonian communities. Learning a few Spanish phrases can go a long way.
  • Diverse Climate: Ecuador has multiple climates-coastal areas are warm and humid, the Andes are cooler and can change rapidly, and the Amazon is hot and humid.
  • Packing Essentials: Bring layered clothing for the Andes, sun protection for high altitudes, and rain gear for the Amazon. Comfortable walking shoes are a must.
  • Quito and other high-altitude destinations like Cotopaxi can lead to altitude sickness for some. Stay hydrated, avoid alcohol for the first day or two, and consider over-the-counter remedies if you're prone to altitude sickness.
  • Vaccinations: Yellow fever vaccination is recommended for travel to the Amazon. Make sure you are up to date on routine vaccines.
  • Drinking Water: Tap water is not considered safe for drinking in most areas. Stick to bottled or filtered water, even when brushing your teeth.
  • Personal Safety: Ecuador is generally safe, but take precautions in crowded areas, especially in larger cities. Avoid isolated areas at night, and keep valuables secure.
  • Ecuador is home to incredible biodiversity, especially in the Amazon and Galápagos Islands. Respect wildlife and follow local guidelines to protect delicate ecosystems.
  • Galápagos National Park Regulations: Strict rules are in place to protect the islands, so follow your guide's instructions and avoid bringing seeds, plants, or food that could disrupt the ecosystem.
  • Domestic Flights: Flights are common for travel between major cities and the Galápagos Islands. Book flights to the Galápagos well in advance.
  • Buses: Buses are affordable and widely available, especially for traveling between cities and regions. For remote areas, you may need to book in advance.
  • Self-Drive: Road conditions vary, and traffic rules are strictly enforced. Be prepared for winding mountain roads, especially in the Andes.
  • Entry Requirements: Most nationalities do not require a visa for stays of up to 90 days, but check entry requirements in advance. Passport validity of at least six months is typically required.
  • Local Etiquette: Ecuadorians are generally polite and friendly. Greetings are usually a handshake or a cheek kiss among friends. Always greet people with a "buenos días" or "buenas tardes."
  • Tipping: Tipping is customary but not obligatory. Round up for small services, and leave 10-15% for good service in restaurants.
  • Cultural Highlights: Ecuador is rich in culture and traditions. Visit Indigenous markets, participate in community tourism in the Amazon or Andes, and explore historic sites, such as Quito's Colonial Quarter, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
  • Whether you're exploring the Andes, Amazon, coast, or Galápagos, Ecuador offers an incredible array of experiences.
