Guarded by a phalanx of mighty volcanos, the cobalt-blue waters of Lake Atitlan represent one of the real wild draws of southern Guatemala. Set high in the country's Sierra Madre mountains, up on the windward side of the Pacific belt, the unique climactic conditions here create the perfect conditions for farming avocados and coffee.
Over the years though, the timber-built villages of the indigenous Kaqchiquel folk have been transformed from agricultural centres to major tourist draws. Today, towns like Panajachel and San Pedro (two of the most popular spots) balance rustic and isolated Mayan character with ecotourist pursuits and relaxation. There are a generous number of Atitlan tour guides offering SCUBA or kayak adventures across the shimmering volcanic lagoon, as well as trekking excursions to the peak of cloud-topped Atitlan or Toliman, where the sweeping panoramas of the Guatemalan peaks are second-to-none. All around, there are winding walking paths and swimming beaches between the tiny pueblos; perfect for a lazy week in the middle of nature.
