Rethymno sits on the Greek island of Crete, as the land’s third largest town. Despite its’ prominent size, the town’s flowing seaside coast and unhurried provincial attitude makes for a far less urban getaway than some of its’ neighboring cities. Along it’s dazzlingly blue Mediterranean waters lie sandy beaches beckoning sun-seekers to its’ warm shoreline, where resident turtles are just as frequent visitors as the sunbathers themselves. For the non-reptilian beach goers, cafes and eateries provide waterfront views from Rethymno’s Venetian harbor.
Though luxurious hotels plush with modern amenities stretch along the city’s east end, your Rethymno tour guide will highlight the overwhelming historical influence of its’ architectural design where, old town buildings and decor reflects its’ history of occupation by the Romans, Venetians, and Ottomans. A 15th Century fortress lies in the center of its’ old town, below which a maze of narrow roads intertwines around charming balconied-homes and elaborate statues. This well-balanced marriage as a century-old landmark and modern destination is perhaps what makes Rethymno an exemplary tourist destination.
