Once the administrative and political capital of German Togoland and then British Togoland (following WWI), Ho is now the urban main town and transportation hub of the Volta Region. The town itself is a conglomeration of brick-built homes and ramshackle markets that hide between the lush subtropical forests of western Ghana. And talking of markets, there's a regular bazaar in Ho that draws in plenty of hagglers each week, flush with farmer's stalls and craft hawkers, and chop bars selling generous servings of Banku and Fufu. The highlight of the year though is the Asogli Yam Festival that is celebrated each September with dances and market stalls packed with huge yams, all in honor of the yearly tuber harvest. Ho tour guides help plan excursions out to the waterways and wilds of the Digya National Park, or the enthralling Tafi Atome Monkey Sanctuary where the friendly Lewis Mona monkeys eagerly await gifts.
