Perched between the Mediterranean and the eastern end of the Nile delta, Port Said once reigned supreme as the most bustling and prolific export and import centre on the coast of North Africa. Today, the town continues to pulse with a mercantile energy thanks in large part to the Suez Canal, and visitors can easily spy out the colossal silhouettes of super tankers as they pass through Egypt’s most famous manmade waterway.
Going back a few streets and into the criss-crossing grid of roadways that is central Port Said, tour guides can be seen weaving beneath the arabesque arches of the traditional homes in Al-Ganoub, curiously reminiscent of Marrakech or Casablanca, while others lead groups towards the Corniche – a sleepless strip of modern boutiques and international eateries now seriously on the up. The Lighthouse of Port Said, the Ferdinand de Lesseps monument and the museums of Palestine Street - chronicling everything from ancient Egypt to the history of the Suez Canal itself - are also worth a stop-off.
