While the glittering silver that was plucked from the Bohemian hills nearby may have deserted this town in the 16th century, there’s no question that its current line-up of cultural accolades helps gild Kutná Hora in an altogether different veneer of richness. Not only has it risen as one of the Republic’s modern touristic gems, but now also proudly sports a UNESCO World Heritage badge, which needs very little justification when wandering between the eye-watering Gothic facades and beautiful frontispieces of its historic old town centre.
The undisputed architectural pièce de résistance of the town comes with the magnificent Church of St Barbara, which looms large with its splinter-like turrets above the meandering tracks of the city train station. Also noted by UNESCO is the town’s Cathedral of Our Lady at Sedlec, while many Kutná Hora tour guides will push straight on to the adjoining Kostnice Ossuary, an eerie and ghostly construction built entirely from human bones. The culture doesn’t stop there either, because travellers can also head to the Silver Mines that once made this town so powerful and the old Royal Mint of King Wenceslas II, or, they can simply settle for a spot of local wine and dumplings in one of the local gastropubs.
