The history of glass and crystal Bohemia
Bubbling sulphur springs and mineral water streams and curious ‘colon’-prefixed therapies abound in Karlovy Vary, the Czech Republic’s answer to the jet setter resorts of Switzerland and France. The town itself sits nestled between the soft hills and rocky outcrops of Western Bohemia, where it rises in terraced streets of pretty painted homes of red and green and aqua blue, adorned with Germanic filigrees and neo-classical carvings to boot. Recently Karlovy Vary tour guides have been particularly proud of their city’s place in the line-up of James Bond filming locations, which has served only to fuel the town’s Monaco and Monte Carlo pretensions. Don’t worry though, there’s still an earthy an enthralling Czech underside to this town, and frothy pilsner or potent Becherovka (a local speciality) can still be glugged at smoky jazz bars amid visits to colonnades and curious museums packed between tight-knit cobblestone lanes.
