Trogir might have ceded the limelight to its near neighbor of Split, but it does have a lot up its sleeve! From its approach through flower-scented hills on the edge of the Dinaric Alps, and bridges linking it to Croatia’s mainland and Čiovo Island next door, Trogir’s medieval walls contain enough world-class sights that have earned the entire city a world heritage status. Just take the handsome 11th century Romanesque-Gothic styles of St Lawrence Cathedral and the defensive walls of St Marko, both packed with elegant Venetian flourishes. Or, check out the crenulations at the Kamerlengo fortress, the pretty Ducal's Palace, and the endless loggias that fringe the squares of the old town. This city museum is in fact, now preferred over the big cities by visitors who look to get lost in its relaxed Mediterranean vibe and medieval cobbled streets. At night, in the summer, there's nowhere better to be than along the seafront walks of Trogir centre, devouring grilled sardines and pasticada while your local Trogir tour guide (rather appropriately) regales you with stories about Kairos, the Greek god of happy moments.
