Founded in 1525, Santa Marta holds the incredible distinction of being the oldest city in Colombia and the second oldest in all of South America. Santa Marta is home to rich archaeological sites that tell the history of the nearly 500 year-old city as well as its indigenous peoples.
A Santa Marta tour guide can take you to many of the amazing nature and wildlife locations the city has to offer. For example, bird watching in the incredible Sierra Nevada can be a perfect cap to enjoying a day touring archaeological scenes of Ciudad Perdida (Lost City). Visit historic locations such as La Quinta de San Pedro Alejandrino, the house where liberator Simon Bolívar died which now serves as the Museo Bolivariano. Another incredible attraction in Santa Marta is the Parque Nacional Natural Tayrona, home to amazing beaches, hiking trails, and wildlife. The historic downtown area, the elegant cathedral, and any of the shops or museums are all great reasons to stick around the city itself to explore and enjoy. Whether dancing the night away in the city or enjoying romantic sunsets on the beach, Santa Marta is full of attractions for everyone.
