In 1576, an Englishman named Martin Frobisher sailed into the area in search of the Northwest Passage; for many years the Inuit settlement was known as Frobisher’s Bay before reverting to its Inuktitut name of Iqaluit in 1987.
Iqaliut, the “place of many fish”, is the capital of Nunavut and is Canada’s gateway to the northern regions. The arctic climate ensures that the land and water is frozen most of the year, and in winter one can’t tell where the land ends and the sea begins over endless white landscapes.
An Inqaliut tourist guide would take visitors fishing, hiking, camping, hunting, and to see the wildlife. Beautiful Inuit art and crafts, often soapstone carvings, are on display and most tourists like to take these away as keepsakes of their wonderful experience in this fascinating place. One of the most beautiful sights while out on the forbidding landscape would be to happen upon an Inukshook, a monument of unworked stone. It could mean “someone was here”, or “you are on the right path”, as a directional aid.
