Crowds of visitors filter their way through Siem Reap in northern Cambodia every year, most looking to admire the mighty temple complex at Angkor Wat, the mysterious and ancient eighth wonder of the world that still stands as one of the most striking examples of old Khmer architecture in all of Southeast Asia.
The growing and sustained popularity of the site in recent decades has led to fast development in the town of Siem Reap itself, and visitors now enjoy one of the most hospitable centres for tourism in all of Cambodia, complete with plenty of accommodation options, various bars, restaurants and a number of interesting museums (for the most part related to the ancient site at Angkor).
But while its Ankgor that’s formed the major point in most Siem Reap tour guide books, the city also plays host to a number of other worthy attractions, such as the Psah Chas marketplace, where local craftsmen tout trinketry and antiques made in the ancient Khmer fashion, or the Cambodian Cultural Village, where it’s possible to find miniature reconstructions of the country’s most foremost heritage structures.
