Battambang, founded in the 11th century by the Khmer Empire is located in northwestern Cambodia. The city is a popular tourist destination due to its many ancient temples, Buddhist shrines and the famous bamboo railway.
Touring the city is easy, and a Battambang tourist guide would recommend viewing the city on foot the majority of the time. Taxis and tuk tuks can be taken from place to place, and bicycles and motorcycles can also be rented.
Battambang is well known for its ancient statues, the most prominent of which depicts an ancient Khmer King holding a large stick. Nearby Phnom Sampeu is adorned with Buddhist statues and is host to a monastery with two beautiful stupas. Don’t miss the movements of thousands of bats from caves here during the evenings and night. Wat Banan is referred to as the miniature Angkor-wat, and climbing the impressive stairs to the temple leads to a magical view.
Apart from the lovely Buddhist architecture that’s dots the landscape, immerse yourself in the city’s distinct local flavour by taking cooking lessons or visiting the local industry be it weaving silk on wooden looms, making rice paper for spring rolls or drying mushrooms at the mushroom farm.
