Florianópolis, or Floripa as it is fondly called, is a large island off the coast of the state of Santa Catarina. Established by the Portuguese in 1673, the city houses lovely colonial architecture dating with cathedrals, museums and fortresses dating back to the 18th century. One can enjoy picturesque views of the city, its long coastline, towering cliffs, waterfalls and lakes from the Hercílio Luz Bridge, one of the three bridges connecting the island to the continent. But the main draw that makes Florianópolis a major tourist attraction is its 42 beaches; their beauty accentuated by the activities and nightlife that revolve around them. Whether you enjoy surfing, fishing, an assortment of water sports or other outdoor sports like mountain biking, your Florianópolis tour guide will pack you off to Santinho Beach. Other famous beaches to visit include Campeche, Ingleses, Joaquina, and Armaçao. For the best surfing for beginners, engage a surfing instructor at the Barra da Lagoa, home to the World Surfing Championships and perfect waves. Floripa’s perfect days of sand and waves are further complimented by excellent seafood, friendly locals, a pulsating nightlife and a host of festivals through the year, the Carne de vaca or the carnival being the most happening!
