In the wild and jungle-dressed reaches of the Cayo District, all roads eventually lead to San Ignacio. The hub of the whole region, it's been transformed from an old mahogany logging center to a buzzing tourist hotspot and vibrant local market town (in that order). Take a stroll down lively Burns Avenue, between the coffee shops and massage parlors, and you'll discover San Ignacio tour guides touting everything from jungle hikes in the Mayan wilds to temple visits. And talking of temple visits, it's the spine-tingling cave shrines of nearby Actun Tunichil Muknal that usually draw the most crowds – they, along with the Barton Creek caves are known for their evidence of human sacrifice in centuries gone by. Other ruins like Caracol and Xunantunich are also on the menu, while the cultural treasures of the Cahal Pech site are a little closer to home (be sure to visit the adjoining museum). And once you’re done with the history, you could hit the cantinas for corn fritters and spicy tacos, or flit between the ad hoc markets to buy mysterious Mayan good luck charms.
