One of the world’s most beautiful Indian Ocean getaways, the country of Sri Lanka has but recently emerged from the troubles of civil war, ready to share its natural wonders, beautiful landscapes, warm hospitality and exotic culture with the rest of the world. With an assortment of amazing destinations and miles of coastline to explore, this South Asian island country is increasingly becoming the ”Go to “ destination of the world, promising all its visitors a memorable holiday!
Where it all begins: The West Coast
Almost all visitors flying into Sri Lanka arrive via the west coast. As the International Airport is located 22 miles north of Colombo, a good first stop is the nearby beach town of Negombo. Home to some nice beaches & resorts, colonial remnants and a vibrant fishing community, this spot is a great place to initiate first acquaintances with the country, and to sleep off the jet lag. For visitors who are eager to experience modern day Sri Lanka, a visit to the bustling commercial capital city, Colombo is a must. Though Colombo does lack the tropical charm that the rest of the country enjoys, one can get a taste of Sri Lanka’s history, culture and vibrant religion here. A visit to the National Museum, Gangaramaya Temple, Raja Maha Vihara and St. Lucia’s Cathedral area are a must, giving travellers a quick glimpse into colonial, traditional and yet modern Sri Lanka.
The Best Beaches on the West Coast of Sri Lanka: While Negombo and Colombo are the area’s biggest names, there are some other west coast destinations that boast a much more tropical appeal. The Kalpitiya Peninsula (north of Colombo), Kalutara, Beruwala and Hikkaduwa (farthest south) beach areas are amongst the most popular spots to visit. With gorgeous sandy shores, clear waters and everything from high-end resorts to backpacker joints, these west coast getaways have something to offer every sun-loving traveler.
The Colonial South Coast Experience
Continuing south from Hikkaduwa, visitors will hit the first major destination of the south coast: the city of Galle. A well-preserved colonial town, its charming streets are filled with cultural events, quaint cafés, luxury resorts and an old-world vibe, making it one of the country’s must-visit destinations. Sri Lanka tour guides will also espouse a visit to the Galle Fort, Dutch Church, iconic lighthouse and vibrant Muslim quarter of town, leaving tourists captivated and intrigued.
For an entirely different activity while in the south, keep aside a few days to visit Yala National Park. The most beautiful National Park in the country, tourists can expect to see elephants, leopards, exotic birds and other gorgeous displays of wildlife.
Sri Lanka’s Quieter Side: The East Coast
Though not as popular as the West and South coasts, Sri Lanka’s East Coast is slowly making a name for itself. With quiet beaches and fewer tourists, this is a great spot for a more peaceful, secluded getaway in Sri Lanka. Uppuveli and Nilaveli are two beaches (in Trincomalee) that have yet to be taken over by tourism, while the beaches of Passekudah & Kalkudah are quickly becoming more developed. Further south, the Bay of Arugam is a long-time favorite tourist destination of the east, well known and frequented for its excellent surf.
Moving to Sri Lanka’s North Coast
Worlds away from the rest of the country, Sri Lanka’s northern coast is most famous for its town of Jaffna. Boasting a beautiful mix of colonialism and Tamil culture, this vibrant region (along with the entire Jaffna Peninsula) houses some gorgeous beaches, ancient temples and a captivating, yet tumultuous history.
Whether you’re exploring the famous beaches of the west, the colonial corners of the south or the secluded shores of the east, the island of Sri Lanka will pleasantly surprise with its diversity, charm and natural beauty.
