Rwanda boasts a wide variety of natural attractions, making it quite difficult for visitors to leave this beautiful country without enjoying their holiday as desired. Rwanda as a country is crowned the land of a thousand hills because of its thousand hills, which are characterized by amazing savannah, beautiful hills and deeper valleys.

Lake Kivu is one of the African Great Lakes and is one of the two smallest African Great Lakes, but it is the third deepest and sits at the highest altitude; the Lake is part of Africa’s Great Rift Valley in the west of Rwanda. Covering a surface area of 2,700 square kilometres, Lake Kivu is the largest lake in Rwanda and the sixth largest in Africa; the lake is enclosed by remarkable mountains and has deep emerald green waters. 

Lake Kivu is also rich in salient coastlines and beaches with great accommodations nearby. 

  • Tea Gardens 

 “Do you know in Africa” Rwanda is listed among the largest tea-generating countries? Tea in Rwanda was introduced in 1952 and is now one of the country’s largest exports. The fertile volcanic soil and temperate climate make perfect conditions for tea growing. 

The majority of tea in Rwanda is cultivated on large plantations with a small contribution from tea cooperatives and private growers; tea plants are seen covering the rolling hills, their rich green a striking contrast to the blue skies, dirt roads and sunshine. 

 Tea plantation tours are one of the thrilling and educative safari activities in Rwanda, and they take place in several locations across Rwanda; some of the major tea plantations are Gisovu Tea and Gisakura Tea in the undulating hills at the western fringes of Nyungwe Forest National Park.

  1. Lake Burera

Lake Burera, also known as Bulera, is one of the twin lakes of Burera and Lake Ruhondo in Rwanda. It is situated on the edge of Mountain Muhabura near the beautiful peaks of the Virunga Mountains in the background.

Lake Burera is located in northwestern Rwanda at the border with Uganda.

Covering an area of 55 square kilometres, Lake Burera is the second largest lake in Rwanda, coming second to Lake Ihema. 

Lake Burera is one of the fascinating lakes in Rwanda, and during your visit, you will do a boat cruise exploring the beautiful lake and enjoy the scenic surroundings and many bird species.  

  • Virunga Mountains

The Virunga Mountains are one of the best destinations to visit on a Rwanda safari, most especially for travellers who enjoy volcano climbing. The Virunga Mountains are a chain of 8 volcanoes shared by Uganda, Rwanda and Congo; six of these volcanoes are inactive, and two are very active. 

These Virunga are situated in the Northern Park of Lake Kivu, found on the north border of Rwanda; in Rwanda, there are 5 volcanoes which are found in Volcanoes National Park – the best place to meet the mountain gorillas.

  • Karisimbi – the highest at 4,507m

  • Bisoke, with its verdant crater lake at 3,711

  • Gahinga at 3,474 meters
