A Guide to Tracking These Majestic Creatures

Uganda is home to a diverse range of wildlife, including the highly endangered rhinoceros. While rhinos once roamed freely in the country, poaching and habitat loss led to their extinction in the wild by the 1980s. However, thanks to conservation efforts, rhinos have made a remarkable comeback in Uganda, and visitors can now see them in a protected environment. If you’re planning a trip to Uganda and want to witness these incredible creatures up close, here’s where you can find them:

Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary: Uganda’s Rhino Haven

The only place in Uganda where rhinos can currently be seen in the wild is Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary. Located about 170 kilometers (105 miles) north of Kampala, along the route to Murchison Falls National Park, this sanctuary provides a safe and controlled environment for rhino conservation and breeding.

Why Visit Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary?

Rhino Tracking: Visitors can experience guided rhino tracking on foot, allowing for an intimate and educational encounter with these magnificent animals.

Conservation Success: Ziwa is home to over 35 southern white rhinos, all part of an ambitious reintroduction program aimed at restoring rhino populations in Uganda.

Other Wildlife: Besides rhinos, the sanctuary boasts a variety of wildlife, including antelopes, monkeys, crocodiles, and an impressive array of bird species.

Sustainable Tourism: Entrance fees and guided tours contribute directly to rhino conservation efforts and the livelihoods of local communities.

Future Plans for Rhinos in Uganda

Uganda Wildlife Authority and conservationists plan to reintroduce rhinos to national parks like Murchison Falls and Kidepo Valley in the future. As the rhino population at Ziwa continues to grow, these efforts will ensure that rhinos once again thrive in Uganda’s wild landscapes.

How to Visit Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary

Getting There: The sanctuary is accessible by road from Kampala or Entebbe, with the drive taking approximately 3-4 hours.

Best Time to Visit: Rhino tracking is available year-round, but the dry seasons (June–September and December–February) offer the best conditions.

Accommodation: Visitors can stay at lodges near the sanctuary or within the reserve itself, with options ranging from budget to luxury.
