Located in the southwestern corner of Mainland China, the province of Yunnan is typically the point of initiation of travellers looking to experience China beyond its big cities. Home to over 45 million people, which comprise a third of all of China’s minorities that blend beautifully together, this province exhibits a unique cultural flavour. Further, Yunnan hosts both arctic and tropical climates, its biological diversity promising fantastic backdrops and hence a plethora of sites and attractions that can keep travelers of all ages and interests enthralled.

Visiting the Capital of Kunming

Stone_Forest_KunmingYunnan’s capital and largest city, Kunming is one of the country’s most visited tourist destinations. Known as the City of Perpetual Spring, its temperate, year-round climate makes this city of 3 million one of China’s most alluring. From its stunning Yangzong, Green and Dian Lakes to Daguan, Golden Temple Park and the World Horticultural Expo Garden, outdoor enthusiasts will be thrilled with the multitude of attractions and natural beauty in the capital. Also home to some notable temples (Yuantong & Qiongzhu), the Yunnan Ethnic Village and the world famous Stone Forest, Kunming is the entry point and top of all lists for people traveling to Yunnan.

Traveling Time in Lijiang

Lijiang_Old_TownNorthwest from the capital of Kunming, lies the UNESCO World Heritage Old Town of Lijiang. With a history reaching back more than 800 years, the Old Town of Lijiang once sat as a major trade center, decorated in cobblestone streets, ancient architecture and intertwining alleyways. Still boasting much of its ancient charm, the city layout, culture and Feng Shui design makes this Old Town unlike any other place in China.  Within or nearby Lijiang, visitors can catch a glimpse of the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, Tiger Leaping Gorge and Black Dragon Pool- three spectacular natural marvels that simply must be seen. When to go to Lijiang? March-May and October-November when the weather is mild and rains are few.

Exploring Dali

Three_PagodasIf you’re looking to slow your Yunnan trip down, look no further than the city of Dali. Known for its laid-back atmosphere, old town, peaceful temples and stunning natural surroundings, plan to spend at least a few days to unwind in this western central city. No tour of Dali is complete without paying a visit to the Old Town, Tang Dynasty’s Three Pagodas (an icon of the city), or heading outside to visit the Cangshan Mountains, replete with guesthouses, natural reserves and beautifully cut trails.

Looking to get even more relaxed??

Peace and Solitude in Shangri-La

Pudacuo_National_ParkLocated in the northwest corner of the Yunnan province, Shangri-La is a county named after the fictional utopian Himalayan community, written about by James Hilton. Situated in a high-altitude location, the landscapes and climate in this region are beautiful, though on the (much) cooler side. If you’re looking to experience Buddhist monasteries, ancient temples, stunning World Heritage Sites and protected National Parks (Pudacuo National Park is a fantastic visit), this region is the place for you. Also a gateway for visitors entering the Tibetan region, Shangri-La is a multipurpose, beautiful visit for those who make it that far northwest in Yunnan.

Still have some time to explore?

Tengchong_LakeBeyond these four major destinations, your Yunnan tour guide would highly recommend a few more unique places also worth working into your itinerary. Lugu Lake in the northwestern plateaus is perfect for hiking and backpacking, while the geothermal springs of Tengchong make for yet another exciting destination. For an entirely different kind of experience, drop by at the Lufeng Dinosaur Museum (Lufeng County), home to a series of large dinosaur discoveries in recent years, and a fantastic adventure for adults and kids alike!
