Saturated with world famous historical landmarks, Cairo has been quite the popular city on many a traveler's bucket list. And while the pyramids and Sphinx draw sighs of awe and wonder, there is a lot more to see and experience, from shopping in burgeoning markets and getting caught up in the frenzy of whirling dervishes to sitting back and enjoying panoramic views of the city sights. Here is a travel guide to all the essential experiences to be had in Egypt's capital city.
Giza Pyramids and the Sphinx
To make the most of your visit, arrive early to be able to buy the limited number of entrance tickets to go inside the Great Pyramid as well as soak in the ambience of the site in relative peace and quiet. Visit Coptic Cairo
Although predominantly an Islamic city, Cairo is also home to many Christians and Coptic Cairo is their spiritual home. You will find some intriguing churches in this area, such as the Hanging Church and Saint George Church. The Ben Azra Synagogue, located behind the Hanging Church was reportedly built on the site where Baby Moses was found and the most visited Jewish site in Egypt. For an overview of the entire area it’s worth heading to the Coptic Museum for an in-depth look at the history of this religious epicenter. The area around these landmarks is very pleasant with winding alleyways and antique shops perfect for a stroll.
Enjoy the views from the Citadel
A key attraction for the city, The Citadel, although very touristy it is also incredibly peaceful as cars are not allowed in the area. Encompassed in the stone Fortress are several mosques, palaces and museums but the main draw is the Turkish style Mohammad Ali Mosque where you will find an incredible view over Cairo from the front esplanade.
Take a walk around Al Azhar Park
During your Cairo sojourn, there might be a time when you will want to pace it down; Al Azhar Park will provide you with the perfect opportunity to do so. What was originally a mountain of garbage is now a beautiful landmark and well worth a few hours worth of exploration. The view over Cairo and the Citadel is incredible and you are sure to find plenty of restaurants and cafes in the area to relax and take in your surroundings.
Catch the Whirling Dervish
At night it’s a great idea to head over to Beit El Harrawi where you can see traditional dance shows in beautiful surroundings. This incredible 18th century house is a wonderful location on it’s own but has been more recently renowned for it’s shows. As you get wowed by Tannoush (Whirling Dervish) displays, you can also see some Sufi dancing and listen to the sounds of traditional medieval instruments.
There's shopping in Khan eL Khalili
Originally a destination for foreign tradesmen to show their produce this ex-mausoleum is now home to hundreds of Egyptian storeowners giving you the best souvenirs, antiques and jewelry. It’s an Aladdin’s cave of tourist gifts and an incredible place to wander around. There are plenty of coffee houses and amazing street food to ensure you’re well nourished to bargain to your heart’s content!
