The Serengeti Ecosystem cover an area of more the 14,700 sq km and is the second largest national park in Tanzania. This park is bordered in the north by Masai Mara in Kenya. The word 'Serengeti' comes from the Masai Language meaning 'endless plains'.


The Serengeti is divided into the Western Corridor, the Northern Serengeti, the Southern and the Eastern wing. The Great Wildebeest Migration is one of the major attractions in this park. Most rivers in the Serengeti are seasonal rivers. Thus, during the dry periods, the animals are forced to migrate north to the Mara river which is the perennial water sources in the Serengeti. The migration varies from year to year, depending on the rain pattern and schedule.


Early rains mean early migration and late rains mean late Migration. The migration includes nearly 1.5 million wildebeests, 700,000 zebras, 200,000 elands and nearly 500,000 gazelles. This can be sighted in different parts of the park at different times of the year.

The Western Corridor is famous for  Gurumeti river and Mbalageti river as crocodiles are a common sight here.

The Northern Corridor comprises of an area known as Moru. It is famous for kopjes. Here, one can also can find lots of rhinos and other animals. Moru has the rhino museum, it is found in the Micheal Grzimek memorial rhino post.

In the Southern Corridor, one can find the ancient Masai paintings in the rocks and leopards are a common sight here.

The Central serengeti, Seronera, is among the best sites in this park. Seronera is famous for elusive leopards in the Seronera Valley. Crocodiles, pods and rafts of hippos can be spotted easily in this region.

The Eastern wing comprises of kopjes and vast extended plains. Here, the Masai kopjes , Gol kopjes and Barafu kopjes can be spotted.

For a good safari, one need a minimum of two days in this park, though more stay adds more value and ability to cover vast expanses of this park.
