Tourists visiting Socotra require an entry visa, issued exclusively by the Passports and Immigration Department in Socotra. The visa costs $150 and is valid for 30 days. A registered tourist company in Socotra sponsors the tourist, handling the visa process. Tourists need to send a copy of their passport, and the visa is usually processed within a week to ten days. Once ready, a copy is sent via email or WhatsApp, with the original delivered upon arrival at Socotra Airport.


Safety in Socotra

Unlike mainland Yemen, Socotra is conflict-free and maintains its own culture and language. It remains unaffected by mainland conflicts, ensuring a safe environment for visitors. Travel and Health Insurance

Travelers to Socotra should obtain travel and health insurance. Travel insurance covers trip costs in case of delays or cancellations. Reputable international insurance companies such as Global Underwriters or IATI Travel Insurance are recommended.


Flights to Socotra in 2024/2025

There are two ways to reach Socotra:

  1. Direct Flights: The preferred and safest option is via Air Arabia from Abu Dhabi. Reservations are organized by a private company subcontracted with Air Arabia. Flights for this season will operate three times a week, on Sundays, Tuesdays, and Fridays. Due to limited seating, reservations should be made 2-3 months in advance. The round-trip ticket for the 2024-2025 season costs $930.

  2. Cairo-Aden-Socotra: This route is less preferred due to safety concerns but can be arranged by the tour company if the Abu Dhabi flight is fully booked.


Climate in Socotra

Socotra’s climate is warm and arid, with hot summers (up to 40°C) and mild winters (around 20°C). The island experiences minimal rainfall, with a monsoon season from June to September when tourist activities are suspended. The best time to visit is from October to May:

  • October to December: Warm, wet season, great for hiking and mountain activities.

  • January to February: Dry season, ideal for both mountain and sea activities like snorkeling and diving. Trees bloom from mid-February to mid-March.

  • March to May: Dry, warm weather, perfect for sea activities.

  • June to September: Strong winds and high temperatures, not ideal for regular visits but good for specific activities like paragliding or turtle hatching observation.


Cost of Visiting Socotra

The cost varies by tour company. Private Package: 8 days/7 nights, with six nights of camping and one night in a hotel. Prices start at $999, varying by group size. This package includes an exclusive crew (cars, drivers, translator, cook) and the best hotel accommodation on the island.


Payment

  • Tour fee: Available both Cash and Card

  • Visa fee: Paid in advance by the tour company, collected in cash upon arrival.

  • Flight tickets: Paid via wire transfer to the flight company in the UAE.


Cash Matters

ATMs are unavailable, and credit cards are not accepted. Tourists should bring clean, unworn USD banknotes and exchange them on the black market in Hadibo City. Check with your operator for the daily exchange rate.


Accommodation

Hotels are available only in Hadiboh, with two levels:

  • Cheap hotels: Approximately $25 per night, standard quality.

  • Good hotels: More services, higher prices, up to $100 per night.

Camping is preferred by most tourists.  Tour companies provide all necessary supplies, including a fully equipped kitchen and unique tent toilets.


Transportation

Tour companies provide air-conditioned 4×4 cars, usually Land Cruisers, accommodating up to four passengers each. They also arrange a boat trip to Shu’ab beach.


Food

Upon arrival in Hadiboh, tourists dine at a restaurant. During camping, a private chef prepares meals, and upon return, meals are again served at a restaurant. The cuisine includes seafood, meat, chicken, vegetables, fruits, and more, ensuring a memorable dining experience.


Bathroom During Camping

Most camps have modest bathrooms, with good tour companies providing portable bathrooms where necessary.


Communications, Internet, and Electricity

Mobile coverage is limited to Yemen Mobile, Etisalat UAE, and a Saudi company. Coverage is sporadic, mostly outside major areas. Tourists can obtain an Etisalat UAE SIM card or ask their tour guide for hotspot access. Wired internet is available only in hotels in Hadiboh but is generally slow. Electricity is available in the city, so bring power banks. 2socotra provides power inverters in cars for charging devices.


Activities

Socotra offers photography, hiking, mountain climbing, cave exploration, swimming, diving, sunbathing, fishing, bird watching, and wildlife observation. Visitors can also interact with locals, visit traditional villages, and try traditional cuisine while respecting the island’s delicate ecosystem.
