Shushtar water structures complex in Iran is one of the spectacular and extraordinary attractions of Khuzestan province. This complex is known as the largest industrial complex before the Industrial Revolution, which is unique not only in Iran but also in the world. This amazing structure dates back to the Sassanid period.

The crossing of the Karun and Dez rivers in Shushtar city has led to the construction of a regular and huge irrigation system made of clay, mud, wood and zinc, which brings water to people's houses through the basement. They also cause the watering of agricultural lands and the use of mill wheels to prepare wheat flour. This structure consists of bridges, dams, waterfalls, canals and large tunnels that are very coordinated and regularly connected with each other and have the role of directing water. This beautiful and unique complex was created with the aim of making the most of water.

This interconnected complex with 13 historical works, part of it has been eroded and lost over time, and only a part of it remains, has been registered as Shushtar Historical Hydraulic System on July 5, 2008, as the 10th world work in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Different parts of the Shushtar collection

Watermill

By blocking the Gargar dam, the water level rises and fills the three tunnels dug in the rock. The water of these tunnels is divided into several channels and goes to the part where the water mills are located. There are flowing ponds that create a spectacular view.

Mizan Dam

Due to the low water level, they needed to raise the water level to irrigate the agricultural lands, so they created a dam on the river to increase the water level by blocking the water flow.

Shushtar Kolah Farangi tower

During the Qajar era, this octagonal tower was built by the river, which was a place to monitor the workers, the amount and intensity of the water in the river.

Gargar River

It is a seasonal river located in the north of Shushtar city. It was built by hand during the Achaemenid era to reduce the volume of Karun water for the safety of the city.

Borj Ayar Bridge

This dam is located on the path of the Gregar River, the lowest part of the waterfalls.

Shah Ali Bridge

This bridge is a survivor of the Safavid era, which has many arches, but currently, 3 arches remain.

Shadarvan bridge

With 44 spans, this bridge is one of the oldest bridges in Iran and the largest stone girder bridge in the world, part of which has been destroyed over time.

fishermen's Dam

Another name for this dam is Khodaafrin Dam, which was built to keep the water level high.

girl Dam

The last dam is in Tangehkohestan, through which the Karun River passes.

Selasal Castle

Salas Castle is the oldest part of the water structures of Shushtar, which was used as a defensive fortress for the city and to control the water of the Darion River during the Achaemenid period. In the past, Salas included sections such as the barracks, the tower, the bell tower, the courtyard, the fence, and the moat. Unfortunately, only a few underground rooms and tunnels have remained.
