With February being the month of love, I thought it would be quite appropriate to highlight some of the many romantic getaways one can find here in the Free State. Naturally these places are, in my opinion, an ideal getaway; but opinions can differ and what can I say about love?

Eastern Free State

The first destination I recommend is the stunning Eastern Free State. With quaint little towns peppered along the Maluti Mountain range, they serve as an ideal base to explore an area steeped in history and culture. Most of these towns borders onto our neighbouring country Lesotho, and can be used as a base to explore this mountain kingdom. From Ladybrand in the south to Clarens in the north, the Panorama route leaves one with magical moments and fond memories.

Southern Free State

Another region I can also recommend is the Southern Free State, which incorporates the towns of Smithfield, Reddersburg, Bethulie, and Philippolis. Being a mere 1.5 hours’ drive from Bloemfontein, these places are ideal to explore and enjoy. This is the region to take your Mountain bike off its rack and pedal those back roads and tracks with little or no interference from cars. Sheep and cattle will be your only spectators and you can cycle till your heart is content. Visit the massive Gariep dam with its spectacular sunsets and the distinctive call of the fish eagle, or take a leisurely drive and discover some of the hidden gems of this region.

There are also many wonderful Karoo guest farms as well where you can enjoy the peace and tranquillity of nature and just relax in this wonderful region in the company of your partner.
