Cape Sounio is famous for one reason: it gave inspiration to the romantic british poet Lord Byron, who extolled its natural , unspoiled beauty at the beginning of the 19th century.

The standing columns of the Poseidon temple in the savage beauty of the rocky promontory still inspire the romantic ones, though things have changed, like everywhere in the world.

It is a lovely scenic drive for more than an hour from the city center of Athens, a short excursion that gives a flavour of islands , the group of the Cyclades not being far from there, even visible from the rock, together with the island Aegina 30 nautical miles from Piraeus.

The sunset from there is breath taking, inspiring, taking one away from contemporary Athens.

In August the Poseidon temple opens for the august moon, larger than life, shining upon the white marble columns, a dream rather than reality..
