A Diverse Culinary Experience
Bhutanese restaurants offer a variety of cuisines, including traditional Bhutanese, Indian, Chinese, continental, and fusion flavors. As the capital city, Thimphu has the most diverse dining options, with restaurants specializing in Thai, Korean, Indian, and Bhutanese dishes. Other towns like Punakha, Paro, and Phuentsholing have fewer choices, while dining options beyond these areas are mostly limited to hotel restaurants.
Meat Consumption and Dietary Preferences
Bhutan observes a ban on meat sales for two months each year, based on the Bhutanese lunar calendar.
Additionally, at least three days per month are designated as auspicious days when meat sales are restricted.
As a result, vegetarian options are widely available, though most restaurants and hotels still serve non-vegetarian dishes as well.
Food Authenticity & Special Requests
While you will find Indian, Chinese, and continental dishes, the flavors may differ from what you're used to, as they are prepared by local Bhutanese chefs. If you prefer à la carte meals, it’s best to discuss your preferences with the restaurant before placing your order.
Whether you're seeking traditional Bhutanese flavors or international dishes, Bhutan’s restaurants provide a unique culinary experience influenced by its culture and traditions.
