Piran is a small town on the peninsula and the best-preserved mediaeval town on the Slovenian coast.
It is home to less than 5000 inhabitants, home to nine churches and eight town gates,
many small streets, some squares, beautiful palaces, art galleries, museums, restaurants,
cafes, two hotels and much private accommodation.
It is the best-preserved cultural monument of Slovenian Istria; it has charming medieval Mediterranean architecture and characteristic narrow streets. The town is a protected monument of cultural heritage, an extraordinary and precious city.
Architecture is influenced by the Venetian Republic, which left its mark on most Istrian towns.
Piran grew on salt from the nearby saltpans, Sečovlje.
