The National Library of Kosovo was built in 1974 and designed by Croatian architect Andrija Mutnjakovic. The library building as an architectural structure represents a combination of cubes and domes while belonging to the type of architecture of "new regionalism". In total there are 99 domes divided into segments that resemble the brain and symbolically represent knowledge.
The seven-storey building with a 13,500 m² of the usable area has reading rooms, periodicals, book conservation labs, photo labs, bookbinders, warehouses, administrative spaces and two amphitheatres. Since 1982, the National University Library of Kosovo, then known as the National and University Library of Kosovo, has started its activity in this building. From 2013 it is declared as a cultural heritage monument as well.
National Library of Kosovo even-though listed in the world's ugliest buildings, for locals it represents one of the most unique buildings and city icons of country's capital Prishtina.
