Overview of the Lemosho Route
The Lemosho route is a classic trail that has gained significant popularity in recent years—and for good reason. It offers breathtaking views, an excellent acclimatization profile, and one of the highest summit success rates among all Kilimanjaro routes.
Starting on the mountain’s western slopes, the Lemosho route is available in three itineraries: 6, 7, and 8 days on the mountain. One of its highlights is Cathedral Peak, one of the highest points of the Shira Plateau, standing at 3,872 m (12,703 ft). Trekkers can enjoy an acclimatization hike to Cathedral Peak and take in some of Kilimanjaro’s most stunning panoramas.
Another iconic feature of the Lemosho route is its surreal, alien-like flora, including giant groundsels and lobelias—plant species unique to Kilimanjaro. Notably, this was the route taken by Angela Vorobieva, who at 86 years old, reached the summit and set a Guinness World Record as the oldest person to climb Kilimanjaro.
Expert Recommendation
Lemosho is our top-recommended route for first-time Kilimanjaro trekkers. Its combination of scenic beauty and smooth acclimatization makes it ideal for maximizing summit success.
The three available itineraries cater to different fitness levels and trekking experience:
6-Day Itinerary
Recommended for climbers with recent high-altitude experience (above 4,000 m / 13,100 ft). If you’re considering this option, we suggest completing a multi-day hike at similar elevation within three months prior to your Kilimanjaro climb.
7-Day Itinerary
Best suited for those with trekking experience but limited or no exposure to high altitudes. This itinerary begins with a vehicle transfer to 3,414 m (11,200 ft), bypassing the tropical forest. The first two days include relatively easy hikes with minimal altitude gain—ideal for conserving energy for the more demanding sections to come.
Many climbers with no prior trekking experience also succeed on this route, which is our most popular Lemosho option—over 50% of our climbs are conducted via this route.
8-Day Itinerary
Perfect for those new to hiking or returning to the mountains after a long break. The additional acclimatization day improves summit success rates and allows trekkers to ease into the routine. Unlike the 7-day version, this route starts in the lush tropical forest, offering a richer scenic experience from day one.
Final Note
Regardless of which itinerary you choose, climbing Kilimanjaro requires a moderate level of fitness. Even the beginner-friendly 8-day Lemosho trek involves long days of hiking and significant altitude gain—preparation is key.
