Iza River Valley, the Heart of Maramures

The Iza river valley is a region situated in the heart of Maramures, a district in Northern Romania, sharing a border with Ukraine. Iza is one of the most important rivers in Maramures. It springs in the Rodna and the Batrina Mountains, and on its 83km course the river collects many smaller others until it finally spills into the Tisa River. All along the Iza Valley there are small villages, with histories spaning more than 500 years. The Iza Valley is home to villages known for their historical significance and their wooden churches. The are is famous for showing its travelers great scenery. Notable areas are: the village of Ieud with it’s wooden church (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), the Barsana Monastery, the museum of Dragomiresti, dedicated to the women of Maramures. Also do not miss the dowry trees, which can be seen in some gardens, having bright metal pots of their branches (a tradtion only seen in Maramures).
