Travel Tips - How Much Money Should I Bring when I visit Bhutan?

The amount of money you should bring to Bhutan depends on several factors, including the length of your stay and your spending habits, particularly regarding local handicrafts and souvenirs. Some visitors prefer to carry substantial amounts of cash because they plan to buy souvenirs and gifts for family and friends back home. Others bring minimal cash since major expenses such as food, accommodation, transportation, and guide services are covered in their tour package, reducing the need for additional spending.

We highly recommend bringing US dollars for shopping in Bhutan. US dollars are widely accepted in handicraft stores and other shops, making transactions easier and more convenient. While there are a few ATMs in Thimphu where you can withdraw money using your credit card, it's advisable to carry cash in USD to avoid any inconvenience.

When planning how much money to bring, consider the following:

1. Tour Inclusions: Review what is included in your tour package. If your package covers most expenses, such as meals, accommodations, transportation, and guided tours, your need for additional cash will be limited primarily to personal shopping and incidentals.

2. Shopping: If you plan to buy souvenirs, handicrafts, and gifts, estimate how much you might spend. Bhutan is known for its unique and high-quality handicrafts, including textiles, pottery, and jewellery, which can be tempting purchases.

3. Meals and Drinks: Although many tours cover meals, you might want to try local restaurants or enjoy drinks that are not included in your package. Budget some extra cash for these experiences.

4. Activities and Tips: Some activities and services, such as spa treatments, additional excursions, or tipping guides and drivers, may require extra cash. It's a good practice to have some cash for tips as a gesture of appreciation for good service.

5. Emergency Funds: Always have some extra money set aside for emergencies or unexpected expenses. This can provide peace of mind and ensure you're prepared for any situation.
