The history of today's Dhaka is very old. The journey of the capital city started in 1610 when the first capital was built. Over the ages, many people have stepped on this ground. The decline of Dhaka was mainly during the Mughal period. Over time, numerous communities have come to live in Dhaka by establishing various historical structures. Today's modern Dhaka refers to noble areas like Gulshan, Baridhara, and Dhanmondi, but the decline of Dhaka started in the area now known as old Dhaka. Localities developed on the banks of the Buriganga River are now recognized as tourist attractions in Dhaka. Every day, old Dhaka is becoming a destination for many foreign tourists. Many of them come for tourism, while others come for official work. Regardless of their purpose, they must visit the historical buildings of Dhaka, including Lalbagh Fort, Ahsan Manzil, Tara Mosque, Armenian Church, Dhakeshwari Temple, Curzon Hall, Shibari Bazaar, and other places. When foreign tourists visit the noble areas of Dhaka, they naturally talk about two parts of the city: modern Dhaka and old Dhaka. They enjoy the public life in the Ghinji area of old Dhaka, with its noisy environment and small, narrow streets. This atmosphere is especially prevalent when walking through Shankhari Bazaar. Old, dilapidated buildings catch their eye, and old Dhaka's Oligli has numerous old buildings, some of which are single-storied and some are two-storied.
