Facts about Rothschild's Giraffe
Rothschild's Giraffe is also commonly known as (Giraffa Camelopardalis rothschildi), by scientists, naturalists and conservationists.
The most fascinating of a giraffe’s physiology is the flexibility of its neck. The giraffe has only 7 vertebrae in its long neck, but they are hugely elongated, with each one being nearly 30cm long. Powerful muscles and a highly elastic nuchal ligament hold this incredible structure in place. The force generated by a giraffe swinging its neck is immense.
In the Serengeti National Park, a Masai giraffe has survived in the wild for the past five-six years despite suffering a broken neck in a fight with a rival over a female mate. He just ate at the lower levels where there was more than enough food available. Normally giraffes suffering similar injuries in the wild die soon afterwards or are eaten by lions.
