From Banjarmasin to Cempaka (Martapura) is about 40km, and the estimated travel time from Banjarmasin City to reach Cempaka is around an hour.
Banjarmasin Diamonds are classified into four types :
- Petrous diamonds ( yellow and of low quality)
Black diamonds (black and believed to possess mystical power)
White diamonds and pink diamonds (the best sparkling with the colours of the rainbow)
The Trisakti diamond was the most expensive diamond ever found in this region. It weighed 160 carats and belonged to the pink diamond category.
The mining holes at Cempaka are usually 6 - 10 meters deep and are propped up with logs to prevent collapsing. As long as no diamonds are found, they dig in the horizontal direction so that tunnels are formed. There is no schedule for diamond digging. It can start early in the morning and continue until midnight, under the light of petrol lanterns.
Diamonds and stones deposits are usually at depths of 10-15 meters.
A fun-fact about The Cempak mines is women are strictly forbidden to step over the digging pits as the rough diamonds are referred to “as a virgin”.
