Murchison Falls National Park is the largest conservation area in Uganda. The park’s name derives from its famous waterfall: the mighty Murchison Falls, which are formed where the Victoria Nile powerfully forces its way through a narrow cleft before plunging 43m down with a thunderous roar. The mighty Nile River divides the park into its north and south sections. At the spectacular Murchison Falls the world's longest river explodes violently through a narrow cleft in the Rift Valley escarpment to plunge into a frothing pool 43m below. As the river attracts large numbers of game, a boat safari up the Nile provides the perfect opportunity to see and photograph the animals. The Nile attracts crocodiles, hundreds of hippos, buffaloes, water birds, apes and all the other thirsty wildlife as you go to the bottom of the Murchison Falls that approaches you with a thunderous sound. After a short hike you can reach the “Top of the falls” from where you have a perfect view of the impressive falls and the river flowing below. At the Falls, the Nile gets channeled through a narrow cleft in the Rift Valley escarpment. This is perhaps the most impressive waterfall in East Africa. Boat trips are always conducted by the park authorities to the base of the falls.

The park has a number of wildlife like the Four of the Big Five can be seen, but rhinos are absent. Huge herds of elephants and buffalo are common and lions are easily spotted. Many antelopes can be seen including Jackson’s hartebeest, waterbuck and Uganda kob. Large herds of giraffe are a specialty, as Murchison Falls and Kidepo Valley are the only parks in Uganda where they can be seen. Similar is the case of the localized Patas monkey. Chimps and several other primates can be tracked through the forests in the south of the greater Murchison Falls. Most of the park’s wildlife is found north of the Nile, so all game drives take place on the tracks in the northern section. A game drive in the park allows you to view the African animal kingdom featuring elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, lions, leopards, different species of antelope and many bird species.

The park is bisected by the Victoria Nile, which plunges 45m over the remnant rift valley wall, creating the dramatic Murchison Falls, the centerpiece of the park and the final event in an 80km stretch of rapids. The mighty cascade drains the last of the river's energy, transforming it into a broad, placid stream that flows quietly across the rift valley floor into Lake Albert. This stretch of river provides one of Uganda's most remarkable wildlife spectacles. Green world safari company LTD offers tour packages to this park, and other destinations in Uganda.
