Murchison Falls National Park, the largest and oldest park in Uganda, is a wildlife paradise. Located in northwestern Uganda, the park is famous for its powerful waterfall, where the Nile River squeezes through a narrow 7-meter gorge before plunging 43 meters. But beyond the falls, the park is home to some of Africa’s most iconic animals. Whether you’re on a game drive, boat safari, or nature walk, here are the best animals to see in Murchison Falls National Park.

1. African Elephants

Murchison Falls is home to a large population of elephants, often seen in herds near the Nile River or roaming the savannah. These gentle giants are among the most exciting animals to spot, especially during early morning or late afternoon game drives.

Best place to see them:

  • Along the Nile River banks

  • In the open savannah areas

2. Lions

The park is a great place to spot African lions, including the rare tree-climbing lions in the northern sector. Watching a pride of lions resting under a tree or stalking their prey is an unforgettable safari experience.

Best place to see them:

  • Northern sector, especially near Buligi Game Tracks

  • Early morning or late evening game drives

3. Rothschild’s Giraffes

Murchison Falls has one of the largest populations of Rothschild’s giraffes in Africa. These graceful animals, easily recognizable by their light-colored patches and long legs, are a major attraction in the park.

Best place to see them:

  • Open savannah areas, especially Paraa and Pakuba

4. Hippos

The Nile River in Murchison Falls is filled with hippos, making boat safaris an excellent way to observe them up close. These semi-aquatic giants are known for their loud grunts and territorial behavior.

Best place to see them:

  • On a boat cruise along the Nile

  • At the riverbanks during early morning and evening

5. Nile Crocodiles

The mighty Nile crocodile, one of the largest crocodile species in the world, thrives in the waters of Murchison Falls. These prehistoric-looking reptiles can often be seen sunbathing along the riverbanks or lurking in the water.

Best place to see them:

  • Along the Nile River, especially near the Delta

6. African Buffalo

Murchison Falls is home to large herds of buffalo, which often roam the open grasslands or gather near the water. These powerful animals are a key part of the park’s ecosystem and often seen alongside other herbivores.

Best place to see them:

  • Near water sources and open plains

7. Uganda Kob

This elegant antelope species is the national animal of Uganda and is commonly seen in Murchison Falls. The males have striking spiral horns and are often spotted in large groups grazing in the savannah.

  • Best place to see them:

  • Buligi Game Tracks and open plains

8. Leopards

Leopards are elusive, but Murchison Falls offers a good chance to spot them, especially during night drives. These solitary and stealthy predators are often seen resting in trees or hunting at dusk.

Best place to see them:

  • Forested areas and rocky outcrops in the northern sector

9. Chimpanzees

While Murchison Falls is mostly known for its big game, it is also a great place for primate lovers. Budongo Forest, located within the park, is home to a significant population of chimpanzees, which can be seen during guided trekking experiences.

Best place to see them:

  • Budongo Forest Reserve

10. Warthogs

These quirky-looking animals, famous for inspiring Pumbaa from The Lion King, are commonly seen in Murchison Falls. Warthogs are often spotted trotting through the savannah with their tails held high.

Best place to see them:

  • All over the park, especially near lodges and picnic areas
