Comino was previously known as “Espaestia” and it’s one of the smallest and most peaceful of the Maltese Islands. This island is a popular summer vacation spot, with its renowned Blue Lagoon. The beach with white sand and turquoise sea.
The name Comino comes from the Cumin plant which covers the island along with other flowers. The island has been occupied by various groups of people throughout the years. It was allegedly first inhabited by the Romans, then in the 1500s, the Knights took over to use the island as a hunting ground. In the 16th and 17th century, Comino was used as a place of confinement for the knights. Many were convicted for crimes and sentenced to do unsafe tasks such as guarding St Marty tower.
Now, only a handful of people live on Comino with others only visiting on day trips. The island is 3.5 sq km. There are no commercial buildings, no traffic, partially a dream come true for nature/wildlife lovers.
What to see on Comino Island?
St Mary’s Tower
This is one of the most eye-catching structures on Comino, located 80m above sea level. It’s been used for many things throughout its existence, including a prison of suspected spies during the rebellion against the French, and even a pen for farm animals. The tower was restored in 2002.
A Chapel
A Chapel was built in 1618. The celebration of the Mass takes place every Saturday night and Sunday morning, and visiting tourists are welcome to join in. It is also quite a romantic spot.
British Isolation hospital
Another attraction not to be missed. Built-in 1912 after the cholera epidemic hit the island. A medical institution was built because of a desperate need to take care of the sick.
The Beaches
There are quite a few beaches in Comino, with the Blue Lagoon being the most famous. It gets crowded in summer, so better go there early to find a good spot.
The Crystal Lagoon is located right next to Blue Lagoon, surrounded by a steep cliff, and it’s only reachable by boat which you can easily book.
Quieter beach for the introverts
Santa Maria’s Bay and San Niklaw Bay are both beautiful beaches with white sand and clear waters and are less crowded than the Lagoons.
